Momma, I Can See!

Baby, I’m begging! Baby, I’m begging, begging, Baby! Baby, I’m begging! Baby, I’m begging, begging, Baby! Whoops, sorry about that! Wrong blog (this isn’t the “How To Beg Like Jodeci and Keith Sweat, Deluxe Edition” blog. Haha). When we really want something (whether it be money, certain foods, clothes, shoes, toys, or to go somewhere), we’re oftentimes willing to go above and beyond to get it-asking for it, doing chores we weren’t asked to to, blowing up the kitchen in an attempt to make “breakfast,” over-complimenting someone (but let’s face it, flattery will butter the toughest of us up like some Pillsbury biscuits! Haha). We may want something so badly that we’re even willing to beg for it-crying, screaming, throwing oneself on the floor for attention (are you break-dancing or having a seizure?! Do I need to call 911?!), and the like…and we don’t care what anyone thinks about it.

In those moments where we get what we want (especially when we acted like we didn’t have any home training to get it…Haha), we feel a great sense of satisfaction and accomplishment (I DID IT! YAYYYYYYY! HIP-HIP, HOORAY!). Just as we’re rewarded for being persistent in our quest for material things, we’re rewarded even more when we’re persistent in our quest to achieve God’s favor and blessings. This brings us to the story of Jesus healing the blind man, Bartimaeus, in the Bible.

In the 10th Chapter of Mark, Jesus Christ (our Lord and Savior himself!) is in the middle of his three-year earthly ministry (teaching and preaching about the Kingdom of God). Jesus and his disciples travel to the city of Jericho (we remember Jericho from my previous post, ”Break Down The Walls of Jericho!”->https://jesusbedtimestories.com/break-down-the-walls-of-jericho/), and as they are leaving the city, they see a blind beggar named Bartimaeus on the side of the road. Bartimaeus hears that Jesus Christ is in town (sho nuff! Haha), and he immediately begs Jesus for his mercy and healing-please help me to see, Jesus (I just want to see!)! Many people told Bartimaeus to pipe down and put a sock in it, but Bartimaeus told them to shove it, didn’t pay those salty seaweeds any mind, and began to beg Jesus to heal him even louder (PLEASE HAVE MERCY ON ME, JESUS CHRIST, SON OF DAVID! PLEASE HEAL MY EYES SO THAT I MIGHT SEE! That’s right, Barty! You make your pleas known to Jesus! Don’t pay Beavis or Butthead any mind (those naive nitwits. Haha)!).

Bartimaeus refused to stop seeking Jesus’s healing (he was like the Energizer Bunny, y’all! He just kept going and going and going. Haha), and he finally got Jesus’s attention (YASSSSSSSS!!!!!). Jesus stopped walking and asked his disciples to call Bartimaeus to him; his disciples did as they were told (y’all better obey Jesus! Haha), and Bartimaeus quickly got up and went over to where Jesus was (with help, of course. He couldn’t see anything, and they didn’t have helper dogs or walking sticks during those days. Haha). Jesus asked Bartimaeus a very simple question, to which Bartimaeus gave a very simple and straightforward answer:

Mark 10:51 (KJV)And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight.

I want to see, Lord! Jesus appreciated the fact that Bartimaeus had faith in him and believed that he could restore his sight, and as such, Jesus responded as follows:

Mark 10:52 (KJV)And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.

Bartimaeus can see! Bartimaeus can see! GIRRLLLLLLL, guess what?! BARTIMAEUS CAN SEE!!!! Bartimaeus was sick (blind) and in need of immediate healing; Bartimaeus had faith that Jesus Christ (our Lord and Savior, who died on Calvary’s cross to save us from our sins, that if we would believe in him, we would not perish, but have everlasting life-John 3:16 (KJV)) could give him his sight. By remaining strong in his faith, never giving up (bump those naysayers! They’re drinking way too much Hatorade right now!), and continuing to ask (beg) Jesus Christ for his sight, Jesus showed Bartimaeus mercy and restored his sight-MOMMA, I CAN SEE! HALLELUJAH! PRAISE THE LORD! THANK YOU, JESUS! GOD IS GOOD!

I feel a modern-day remix coming on (it’s in my bones, y’all! It’s in my bones! Haha)! Grab your nachos, a cold one (non-alcoholic beverages! None of that foolishness right now. Haha), hop on the cot, and let’s get to remixing! NOTE: I will be utilizing modern-day language, technology, and ways of living in this story, as we’re picturing this happening today.

Biblical Reference: Mark 10:46-52 (KJV)

*Jesus and his disciples are leaving the city of Jericho (Lord knows those fools needed some spiritual guidance. Haha), when they see a blind beggar named Bartimaeus on the side of the road. Bartimaeus hears that Jesus is there, and immediately begins to seek Jesus’s mercy and healing. He wants a healing, and he won’t stop until he gets it! My man! Haha*

Bartimaeus (blind beggar): Jesus! Jesus! Oh, mighty, merciful, son of the Most High God! Son of David! Jesus! Please have mercy on me! Please heal me, Jesus! I am blind and cannot see! Please heal me and restore my sight, Jesus! I want to see the trees, I want to see the birds running into light poles, I want to see the Raptors completely EMBARRASS the Lakers (easy there, Lakers fans! Don’t run away like LeBron’s hairline is running away from his face! That forehead is unbelievable! Haha)! Please restore my sight, Lord!

Sheldon (a grade-A hater): Man, would you shut up?! Jesus isn’t paying you any mind! Stop begging all of the time! That’s probably why you’re blind in the first place! You were probably begging for money and food, someone got tired of it, and he or she punched you dead in your face! Shut your trap NOW!!!!

*Bartimaeus doesn’t care what that sour pixie stick has to say (didn’t anyone ever teach Sheldon that bumping your gums gets you nowhere, God doesn’t like ugly (aardvark looking dirt rag. Haha), and you should treat others the way you want to be treated (the golden rule)?). He continues to beg for Jesus’s mercy and healing even louder now, and Jesus takes notice*

JESUS CHRIST (to his disciples): Call Bartimaeus over here. I want to talk to him.

The Disciples: Whatever you say, Lord! You’re the one signing our paychecks (their spiritual paychecks, that is. Haha He’ll help with actual money too, though. Haha)!

*Jesus’s disciples go over to Bartimaeus*

The Disciples: What’s up, Bartimaeus?! How’s it hanging, Bro?! Jesus would like a word with you. We’ll help you up and help you to walk over to him.

Bartimaeus: *he quickly springs up, y’all!* Thank you all so much! Hallelujah! Praise God! Jesus has heard my cries! I just want to see. I just want to see.

*The disciples take Bartimaeus to Jesus*

JESUS CHRIST: What wilt thou that I should do unto thee?

Bartimaeus (crying and shaking): Dear Lord, sweet Jesus, I just want to be able to see. I just want to be able to see my family and this beautiful world that God has blessed us with (erm, you’re talking to God in the flesh. Jesus is God’s son. Haha).

JESUS CHRIST: Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole.

*Bartimaeus opens his eyes and-OH MY GOSH! He can see! He can see! He can see!*

Bartimaeus (hugging Jesus and crying tears of joy): Thank you, Jesus! Thank you, Jesus! I can see! I can see! Praise God for the sunshine! Praise God for the blue sky! Praise God for your people (Hey, girl. What your name is? FOUL! Improper English and a corny pick-up line! Haha)! Praise God for everything! I can see! I can see! I can see! I will follow you the rest of my life, Jesus! You are the Messiah of the world!

JESUS CHRIST: You’re very welcome, dear Bartimaeus. It was my pleasure.

  1. As always, great article Carletta! I believe that if we are very persistent in doing God’s work throughout our lives then our reward will be greater than we could ever imagine! I thank you a lot for reminding me that as a Catholic I have a duty to work hard to do God’s work in my life.

    1. Thank you so much, Alejandro! God certainly rewards faith, patience, persistence, and hard work; even Jesus Christ himself was a carpenter for nearly 20 years before he started teaching about the Kingdom of God. When we are passionate about doing God’s will and God’s work, he will always take care of us. God bless you!

  4. Carletta,
You’re so animated! It’s enjoyable to read your article. It really makes it relatable. Your dialogue at the end is especially helpful as well:) There’s a lot to glean from this story, and you made it come alive. Thank you!

    1. Thank you so much, Robert! God definitely gave me a sense of humor, and I want to use it for his glory (thank you, Jesus!)! Haha I will definitely keep them coming! You’re more than welcome! God bless you!

  5. As usual, your sense of humor makes this story is not only enjoyable but also invites fun imaginations that will help children to learn about Jesus in such a beautiful way.

Here through the story you shared today, I have learned 3 things:
    1. Never gives up. Bartimaeus kept calling on Jesus’ name until Jesus came and healed him.
    2. Have faith in Jesus. Bartimaeus really believed in Jesus. Bartimaeus heard many stories about Jesus that fostered faith in Jesus. “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.”
    3. Be grateful for what God has done for us. Bartimaeus did not forget to express his gratitude to Jesus after He healed him.

Thanks again for sharing another piece of beautiful Bible story. 🙂

    God bless you!

    1. Thank you so much, Ferra! Without faith, it is impossible to please God. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen. God rewards true, honest, earnest faith; Bartimaeus had faith that Jesus would heal him, he continued to call on the name of Jesus, and by his faith, he was healed. We should certainly be grateful for what we have, because even if things aren’t how we’d like them to be, there is always someone less fortunate than ourselves who would love to be in our position. Let us always be mindful of that. You’re more than welcome! Haha God bless you!

  6. Hi C.N, i agree with you that Bartimaeus knew what he wanted .We went straight on the point really .Sometimes ,as humans when we don’t know what to ask to the Lord .Good Job Bartimaeus! And also good Job to you C.N ,i like your posts and website

    1. Thank you so much, JK! Bartimaeus certainly knew what he wanted, but even when we’re not exactly sure what to ask God for, Jesus knows what we mean, what we need, and will intercede on our behalf (thank you, Jesus!). I’m so happy that you enjoyed my story! I’ll definitely keep them coming! God bless you!

  7. Hey Carletta! Momma, I Can See! is fantastic. I do love the way you write! You keep it real, but even more, you keep it interesting and fun. 🙂 I did not see that coming. LOL, Keep writing these great Christian bedtime stories.
    Always grateful,
    Tracy

    1. Thank you so much, Tracy! I love Jesus Christ, love people, and love to laugh-why not combine all three for the glory of God? Haha I’m so happy that you enjoyed my story! I will definitely keep them coming! God bless you!

  8. Thanks Carletta for sharing your story expressing the miracle healing powers of Jesus and presenting it with such humour. Well done and God bless you!

    1. Thank you so much, Mo! I will continue to use my God-given abilities to point people back to him (thank you, Jesus!)! God bless you as well!

  9. There is so much to learn from this story and a couple of things flashed through my mind when reading this. 1. The persistent woman in the Bible that the unjust judge granted her wish as he was probably thinking if I don’t give her what she wants she would probably end up slapping me as well lol. (Luke 18: 1-8) 2. I saw a baby girl that was born blind and after multiple operations able to see for the first time. The astonishment on her face and the mother’s tears were quite overwhelming.

    1. Thank you so much, Schalk! God is certainly a miracle worker, and it’s absolutely amazing what he is capable of doing. My late uncle’s best friend was an atheist for a long time, but after becoming a doctor and witnessing several medical miracles before, during, and after surgery, he gave his life to Jesus Christ. He couldn’t explain how some of his patients survived or recovered from their devastating diseases/illnesses-he said himself that it had to be God (he was correct! Haha). God bless you!

  10. Hey Carletta, another great story.
I love the contrast you provide between the King James Version (thee’s and thou’s) and the modern rendition, lol. It’s awesome!
This story shows us how our faith can heal us. He may not do it the same way, but there are always places in our lives that need healing.
We are to be persistent in our prayers, just like Bartimaeus was in his persistence. God wants us to show Him how much we need Him.
    Thank you again, so much,
    Suzanne

    1. Thank you so much, Suzanne! God definitely gave me a sense of humor, and I will forever use it for his glory! Haha As the Bible says, having the faith of a mustard seed can move mountains. When we truly believe that God can heal us (he is the doctor that never fails, that has never lost a case) and are persistent in our prayers and faith, God will always take notice and act accordingly (acting according to his will, of course). So many of us are impatient and become upset if God doesn’t answer our prayers right away or in the way that we want him to; God sees the beginning from the end, and knows what he’s doing. Faith and prayer change things; without faith, it’s impossible to please God. Bartimaeus had this persistent faith, and as a result of it, he was healed. Hallelujah! God bless you!
